Take your family on an adventurous outing in Junction City, KS, and enjoy loads of kid-friendly activities. The city boasts the largest lake in Kansas with a 163-mile shoreline, beautiful prairies and hills to explore, and a 4,400-square foot swimming pool with a 28-foot tall triple tube slide.

1. Discover Nature at Konza Prairie on the Hiking Trails

Explore the Flint Hills on six miles of winding trails through the prairie grass and lowland forest, over limestone ledges and Kings Creek. If you walk up to the highest points, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Kansas River Valley and the Flint Hills.

Be on the lookout for pheasants, deer, turkeys, and even buffalo along the way. The trails do get uneven and narrow in places and occasionally run up steep inclines. With the correct footwear and a little stamina, you and the kids will easily conquer these obstacles.

2. Learn About Nature at the Milford Nature Center

Visit the Milford Nature Center and learn more about the indigenous Kansas fauna and flora. The center exhibits live snakes, turtles, amphibians, lizards, and prairie dogs, to name a few of the animals who live in the region’s woods, prairies, and marshes.

The kids will have the opportunity to touch animal furs, learn how to identify animal tracks, and how to attract birds, butterflies, and other animals to your garden. The center has a large outdoor exhibit featuring indigenous raptors, a bobcat display, and a habitat area.

3. Go on a Fishing Trip at Milford Lake

Milford Lake, with its 163 miles of shoreline, is the largest in Kansas. The lake has beautiful sandy swimming beaches and numerous boat ramps to launch canoes, kayaks, and boats. Here you and your family can relax on a beach, swim, paddle, boat, fish, and even stay over at one of the campsites right on the edge of the water.

It’s a prime fishing destination and has hosted some of the most prestigious fishing tournaments in the country. Anglers come from all over to hook smallmouth, largemouth, and spotted bass, blue and channel catfish, wipers, walleye, and crappie.

4. Cool Down at the Massive City Pool

The Junction City Swimming Pool and Sprayground Complex is a fantastic place to take the kids on a hot summer’s day. The massive 4,400-square foot swimming pool has a 28 feet tall triple tube slide, diving boards, and a wading pool.

Allow the kids to run wild at the sprayground that features eight foam jets, crown jets, water cannons, and a jellyfish tower. In summer, the pool is open from 1 pm to 7 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

5. Take the Family Bowling

The family-friendly Junction City Bowl boats 24 synthetic bowling lanes and a Brunswick SYNC Scoring System. Here you and your family can get together and have loads of fun. There is also a snack bar with a delicious assortment of burgers, sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. Those in the know say you have to try the mouthwatering wings, Junction City Bowl’s signature dish. They are also known for the great birthday parties and events they host.
